Recurring Nightmare (Age: Youth)

I'm looking down at my feet, and as my gaze moves up my body it occurs to me in the way of dreams that, oh yeah, I'm Ernie from the lovable children's television muppet duo, Bert and Ernie. Well, there's nothing out of the ordinary about that. I glance around to locate Bert, since of course we're always together. I'm on a residential suburban street with happy little houses all around me with clean little yards. There's no traffic on the street, luckily, since I'm standing in the middle of it.

I spot Bert on the sidewalk a little ways away and wave to him, "Hi, Bert!" Bert hears me and his eyebrow pulls down in anger. He begins to advance on me, hands outstretched as if he plans to throttle me. At first, I'm nonplussed. Then I get scared as I realize he's not joking. I look around wildly for a place to hide and locate a sewer drain, the kind that's a hole cut out of the sidewalk curb. There's no grille over it, so I dash over and squeeze through into the chamber below the street. Unfortunately, there's nowhere to go from here so I'm trapped, watching Bert slowly advance with an evil, knowing grin on his fuzzy mug.

But just when Bert nears the drain, suddenly we switch bodies. Now, I'm Bert and I'm standing outside of the drain on the street looking in at Ernie, who looks quite frightened. Aha, the tables have turned! My elation is fleeting, however, as now Ernie's face grows angry. I stop dead as he pulls a huge knife from somewhere and starts to climb out of the sewer, his deadly intent gleaming in his eyes.

I wake up just as he reaches for me, but the last thing I think is, how come I didn't know I had a knife when I was Ernie?
